Transmission Slipping Symptoms
Slipping means the transmission isn't transferring engine power to the wheels properly. Here are the symptoms and common causes.
Symptoms
- RPM flare when shifting — Engine revs up between gears; car feels sluggish
- Delayed engagement — Delay when shifting into Drive or Reverse
- Slips under acceleration — Engine revs but car doesn't accelerate
- Harsh or jerky shifts — Abrupt gear changes
Common Causes
- Low fluid — Check level first. Add correct fluid if low.
- Burnt fluid — Brown color, burnt smell. Overdue service. Drain and fill may help if caught early.
- Worn clutch packs (automatic) — Mechanical wear. Requires rebuild or replacement.
- Torque converter issues — Shudder, slip, or delayed engagement.
CVT-Specific
CVTs can shudder, whine, or slip if fluid is wrong or worn. Use only CVT-specific fluid. Wrong type can destroy the unit.
